Access to the cutting-edge resources often required to enter and participate in bioinformatics has been prohibitively expensive. These hardware and software tools can cost thousands to millions of dollars, precluding the participation of many people: those working individually, in small groups, at poorly-funded institutions, or in developing nations. Bioinformatics.Org is an international, non-profit organization committed to lowering this barrier. It does so by forming and supporting collaborations on the development of “The Open Lab,” an environment where free and open resources are developed.
The Organization is currently seeking to collaborate with manufacturers and vendors of cumputer hardware and software for this purpose. The “Co-Lab” program, as it is called, allows its members to co-locate products either onsite or offsite, with the option of participating in the global “Bioinformatics.Org Grid.” Bizarro's presentation will be of interest to those familiar with Bioinformatics.Org and to those who want to know more about it, covering the state of The Open Lab and the various improvements on the drawing board.
