Optimizing Bioinformatics Algorithms for the Altivec Vector Engine

Track: Birds of a Feather
Date: Tuesday, February 04
Time: 8:00pm - 9:00pm
Location: Plaza

At the 2002 O?Reilly Biocon Apple announced Apple/Genentech BLAST. Since then many critical bioinformatics algorithms have been optimized for the PPC G4 Altivec vectorization unit and have attained as much as 8X performance over unoptimzed code. Coupling Altivec optimized code with Apple?s XServe 1U rack mount or other G4 hardware can give your research apps unparalleled performance. Please bring your questions and concerns and Apple?s expert Altivec engineers will be on hand to assist. There will also be a brief presentation by Apple discussing the vectorization process, tools, logic, and example science apps.

Session facilitators will be Ian Ollmann, Ph.D from Apple OS Engineering and Sanjay Patel from Apple's Architecture and Performance group
