Profiling Genomes with Genomic Signature Tags (GSTs)
By Sean McCorkle
Bioinformaticist, Brookhaven National Laboratory
Genome Signature Tags (GSTs) are a versatile DNA-based sequencing
system for profiling genomes in complex communities. 21-bp tags are
positionally defined by restriction enzymes, whose selection allows
control the number of tags per genome. Small tag counts are
sufficient to identify known species. Oversampling allows isolation
of novel species, along with relative abundances information.
