This talk considers the lessons from the past and the implications for the future relating to secure, reliable, survivable computer systems and networks. Among other topics, Neumann considers the roles of architecture, principled software engineering, cryptography, risk avoidance, and risk
management, as well as the relevance of various advanced research and
prototype development efforts to the world, and the relative merits of
open-source paradigms versus proprietary closed-source software.
