Fault-Tolerant Realpolitik: Abandoning Reliability Online
Cory Doctorow, Canada-US Fulbright Chair, Annenberg Center on Public Diplomacy, University of Southern California
Track: Adaptive
Date: Wednesday, May 15
Time: 11:15am - 12:00pm
Location: Lawrence
This discussion is based on Doctorow's column, tracing the history of successful unreliability online, from packet-switching to P2P. A general harangue against the quest to add "security" to P2P networks -- a solution in search of a problem if ever there was one. Some reassuring words on Carnivore and Magic Lantern, on the basis that a small pool of trained experts are poorly suited to making sense of giant datasets, especially relative to distributed nonexpert efforts a la Google. State of the forced-leisure economy as an army of underemployed nerds make the Internet more interesting every day, no matter how low the economy sinks. An attack on the base canard that Internet publishing means that we all have to read the slushpile.
