Nanotechnology: Bringing Digital Control to Matter
K. Eric Drexler, Ph.D., Foresight Institute

Track: Keynote
Date: Friday, April 25
Time: 11:00am - 12:00pm
Location: Santa Clara Ballroom

Over the past few decades, many of the best forward-looking minds have been attracted to the challenge of software: the digital control of information. This work has been hugely successful -- but computer programs can only manipulate bits.

It's time to turn more brainpower to improving what we do in the physical world --healing our bodies in ways that truly bring health, and building our products without throwing leftover molecules into the air and water. It's time to bring digital-style control to our actions in the physical realm.

In his keynote address, Drexler sketches where we are in this extraordinarily challenging project, the payoffs and downsides to be expected, and how the systems engineering expertise found in the software community will make a key difference in the speed and safety with which this new technological revolution arrives.
