This tutorial will start with a quick overview of Mobile Java, and jump into a basic J2ME Hello World application that will quickly be expanded to query online Web Services (Amazon, Google).
J2ME is actually an umbrella term that covers a variety of different profiles and specifications, which may be somewhat daunting for those first starting out. This tutorial will do its best to cut through the different Mobile Java Three Letter Acronyms and version numbers before getting down to code. Regardless of the acronym complexity, experienced Java developers will get the feel right away for reduced number of APIs in the mobile edition of Java as well as the standard open source development tools such as Ant and Eclipse, which will be used during the tutorial.
In addition to the nuts and bolts of mobile development, this tutorial will also give an overview of the tight synergies between Mobile Java and Web Services and explore future directions for the technology as a whole.
