In this highly competitive and liberalized telecom industry today, telecom providers are seeking a competitive edge by value-adding the current available services. One of the most interesting additions is that of Location Based Services (LBS). LBS allows the creation of highly personalized services by determining the geographical location of an user. Not only that, LBS also allows a person to be tracked during an emergency.
In this session, Lee shares the different technologies and techniques that support LBS, such as:
- Global Positioning System (GPS)
- Cell of Origin (COO)
- Angle of Arrival (AOA)
- Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA)
- Enhanced Observed Time Difference (E-OTD)
Lee also discusses some of the current services (such as cab-booking using PDA, personalized shopping) using LBS, as well as the potential use of LBS. The session ends with a look at the new opportunities and challenges faced by application developers.
