SoCalFreeNet.org is a San Diego based grassroots not-for-profit group dedicated to building, deploying and growing public wireless networks and helping to bridge the digital divide.
We'd love to meet and swap notes with anyone from other wireless community groups around the country, any Wireless ISPs (WISPs), general technology enthusiasts or anyone with an interest in technology and helping the community.
We often build our own gear from single board computers running variations of *nix and we'll bring some of it along to show you. We can talk about some of the wireless distros we use like m0n0wall and Pebble, as well as some of the newer commercial gear that's appearing with similar functionality.
Our group has deployed several networks in low-income housing around San Diego, as well as a couple of community wide area networks. If you have similar plans for your community, come along and we'll compare notes and swap ideas.
Our largest network covers an area of ½ mile by 2 miles and has 6 interlinked APs and shares a common 802.11a based backbone. If you're interested in how a network like this is built and scales, drop by and talk.
Last but not least, we'll have some copies of our book available Wirelss Hacking, http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/193183637X/, and several of the authors will be present to discuss their chapters in more detail and to autograph your copy.
