O'Reilly Emerging Technology Conference - March 3-6, 2006 - San Diego, CA
Conference Coverage

L. F. (Felipe) Cabrera, Ph.D.
Amazon Web Services

Felipe Cabrera is the vice president of Software Development for Amazon Web Services. He draws on more than 20 years of experience in the software industry to help Amazon identify and expose technology and data that enables external software and web developers to innovate and build businesses on their own.

Prior to joining Amazon Web Services, Cabrera held several positions at Microsoft and at IBM. He started his tenure at Microsoft as the architect for storage management in the Windows Base Group where he owned storage management services for Windows 2000. In this role he consolidated a number of offerings to create solutions that were key to Microsoft’s growth in the enterprise computing market. He then went on to be an early member in the Microsoft Web Services Architecture group where he developed a number of distributed systems technologies for Web Services. In this role he co-authored several foundational specifications of the so-called WS-* architecture. His last assignment at Microsoft was in the SQL Server team as part of the database mirroring feature.

Prior to joining Microsoft, Cabrera spent 12 years at IBM where he became a member of the IBM Academy of Technology. Among the projects that he participated in were QuickSilver, Starburst, and ADSM. ADSM was an enterprise storage management service that captured a large fraction of the high-end enterprise backup market in the first few months of deployment.

Cabrera earned his doctorate from the University of California at Berkeley where he was also a professor of computer science. He was a Fulbright fellowship holder, is a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, is author of a book on the Web Services Architecture, inventor in 30 issued patents, and author of more than 50 technical articles in different academic and professional publications.
