Chat, Voice, and Video in Location Aware Applications: A Case Study

Track: BOF
Date: Wednesday, January 25
Time: 9:00pm - 10:30pm
Location: Salon A

Moderated by Chris Ngan, Co-founder of Aeria LLC

Applications that account for real-world factors through geographic and situational inference are known collectively as location-aware applications. Various attempts at location aware applications have been limited to trivial applications such as chat. This BoF event will be the second of two events and will:
  • Introduce streaming video-based location aware applications.
  • Integrate previously described chat and voice location-aware applications with streaming video-on-demand location-aware services to build a comprehensive real-world solution in the context of the restaurant and large retailer case studies.
  • Open discussion of some of the areas of research that are relevant to building out increasingly intelligent location-aware applications. Some ideas will be presented and the floor will be opened for idea exchange.
This session will be a continuation of two parallel case studies begun in BoF session I “Building Location Aware Applications”. This case study will introduce ways in which streaming video, and ultimately video-on-demand, can be deployed by retailers with significant benefit both to their own internal operations as well as to their customers. Significant time will be devoted to describing and demonstrating the systems that can integrate location-aware voice, text, and video seamlessly into a comprehensive application for customers and the retailers alike. The location-aware system will demonstrate many of the characteristics of online collaborative and social applications, bringing the session full-circle to proving that the benefits realized in the online world can now be realized in the real-world.

The sessions are interactive and users are encouraged to bring network-enabled devices with which to use the demonstrated location-aware social and commercial applications
