Session

LiPs Linux Phone Initiative

John S. Ostrem, Lead Scientist, PalmSource

Date: Wednesday, January 25
Time: 2:15pm - 2:30pm
Location: Salon ABCD

LiPS exists to define a standardized software platform which allows applications and services to be deployed across all types of Linux telephony terminals, fostering interoperability and promoting adoption of Linux as OS of choice for applications and handsets.

Several organisations are already working to optimise the Linux kernel for use in mobile phones. However, little has been done so far to standardise the higher layers of Linux that enable the applications and services that device manufacturers, third party software vendors and operators rely on increasingly to differentiate their offerings from competitors and generate revenue. Guilhelm will outline the progress to date on the forums work and the opportunities this common platform will open up for developers and entrepreneurs.
