A powerful trend is the unification of VOIP and real-time collaboration (RTC) protocols. XMPP (also called Jabber) has proven itself as the best IM protocol and is emerging as the leading general RTC protocol.
This presentation-based but interactive BOF will cover two cutting edge examples of this unification.
First, the Open Source Asterisk-IM project, which provides integrated presence and events between Asterisk and the Open Source Wildfire XMPP server. It represents the first Open Source platform for unified communications.
Second, we'll cover the new Jingle XMPP protocol extension. The Jingle protocol does VOIP (and more) and is based on the VOIP support in Google Talk. Jingle was crafted to work well with SIP, but will also become an important protocol in its own right.
