Phone Art: Using Telephone Systems for Creative Projects

Track: BOF
Date: Tuesday, January 24
Time: 8:30pm - 9:30pm
Location: Salon B

Moderated by Dee Harvey, Interactive Telecommunications Program

Three students from NYU's Interactive Telecommunications Program will lead a discussion on the use of phone systems in creative projects. The ubiquitous, mobile and social characteristics of phones make them an interesting platform for building social networks, or creating art. The interactions that phones allow are also constrained in certain ways - the user interface is normally limited to a numerical keypad and a small screen, and UI design tends to emphasise the linear. The workshop will look at the limitations and possibilities of telephone technologies and the things that are being made possible by VoIP and open source technology, such as Asterisk.
