Session

Extending SMS and MMS

Dorrian Porter, CEO, Mozes, Inc.

Date: Thursday, March 01
Time: 1:30pm - 1:45pm
Location: Salon ABCDE

At the intersection of mobile telephony, mobile web access, and web services lies an exciting future, but its general availability remains uncertain. This session explores the usefulness of SMS (short message services, a.k.a. text messaging) as a means to retrieve data from the Web, to find and store information discovered in the world for later use and to connect with others regardless of mobile status. Specifically, this session will explore:
  • The popularity of SMS, accessibility, and usage statistics
  • Unique approaches being used for SMS, both in extending access to the Web and by connecting people to the Web in innovative ways
  • The leveling of the playing field for the creation of SMS-based services -- from open APIs to web-based tools
  • A perspective on working within the carrier environment, now and into the future

The aim of this talk is to allow the audience to draw conclusions as to the relevance of SMS in today’s environment, and open discussion on its near and long-term future.
