XMPP and Voice: A New Way to Chat

XMPP has become the open standard of choice for instant messaging (IM) and presence services. An extension to XMPP, called Jingle, has emerged as a capable signaling mechanism for media streams such as voice, video, and file sharing. Jingle helps solve several common signaling protocol problems including firewall and NAT traversal using ICE and STUN, authentication and encryption using XMPP and TLS, and guaranteed delivery.
In this workshop we explore XMPP from the basics to Jingle. Along the way we will discuss compelling, open standards-based voice and rich media applications that are closer to reality than you might think, as well as visionary applications for XMPP.
