The Apache Harmony project is building a compatible implementation of the Java SE platform. Although in progress for only one year, the project has made significant progress, recently producing their first JRE snapshot containing both virtual machine and class library with signficant Java 5 API coverage. The project has two primary goals:

  • to create a full implementation of Java SE
  • to implement Java SE via a modular and component-containing architecture

The project was also founded with the goal of working together with other FLOSS communities to bring more awareness to and participation in open source Java.

This session will cover the background of the project and describe the community and technical issues encountered to date, provide a status report, and demonstrate the current codebase.
