With more than 2,100 monitoring stations the ODL network is the backbone of radiation monitoring in Germany. The aim of the network is to deliver data in the early phase of an nuclear incident. Since 1999 the department has been moving toward Linux. All servers are transferred already; this year we will start replacing 1,200 monitoring stations with Linux-based embedded systems.

This session will show how OSS helped us to transform from a government department to a Linux software-building government department, thereby gaining a much deeper understanding of the technology involved.
