The world is flooded by mobile devices and all of these devices have internet connectivity and can access existing data storages, such as company phone books or sales-force applications. This presents new challenges for data access, but also a bigger challenge for the management of all those devices for the enterprise. SyncML Device Management is an OMA standard that provides a solution for this management challenge and device manufacturers are already shipping products with SyncML-DM clients.

Sync4j is an open source project hosted on the Objectweb site and is a member of the JBoss foundation. The Sync4j provides a SyncML-DM server to ensure you can control the mobile devices in an orderly way. The SyncML-DM server is a framework providing APIs for integration in existing applications, but also provides the ability to execute management operations. This presentation will explain the basics of SyncML-DM (theory) as well the APIs of the Sync4j DM server to perform management operations on a remote device (practice).
