A lot of features have been added to the X11 system, making it possible to advance the Xserver to use modern graphics APIs like OpenGL and to allow for composited desktops. The combination of both technologies leads to compiz, which is a major milestone in the development of a truly OpenGL accelerated desktop.

In this talk Hopf will give an overview over most major updates to the X11 system before moving to Xgl and compiz. The intentions, possibilities, features, and implications will be discussed and demonstrated.

While a lot has happened in the Linux desktop world lately, there are still many obstacles to overcome in the near future.
