Session
Building an Extremely Mobile Thin Client Laptop
Frederic Descamps, Senior Consultant, X-Tend
Track: Linux
Date: Tuesday, 18 October 2005
Time: 10:45 - 11:30
Location: Grand Ballroom
Everybody knows ThinClients; everybody claims to be using Linux on
the destkop. This presentation teaches the audience how
one of Descamps' customers made the transition to a fully mobile
ThinClient environment using a dedicated Thin Linux on an extremely
connected Laptop.
Thin Linux means that there is no harddisk in the laptops, and
the whole environment runs from a small flash disk. An extremely
connected laptop can be connected to the Internet by almost any
connection type one can imagine: Wifi, Cable, GPRS etc.
Descamps discusses the integration of OpenOffice and Firefox
environments on minimal diskspace, including the deployment and upgrade
techniques for roadwarriors. His presentation documents both the
technical as well as organizational and management aspects of this
deployment.
