LDAP Applied
Fran Fabrizio, Senior Systems Administrator, University of Alabama at Birmingham
Track: Linux
Date: Tuesday, 18 October 2005
Time: 16:50 - 17:35
Location: Grand Ballroom
The best tools are ones that solve the problem at hand and problems not yet anticipated. LDAP is such a tool. It is often deployed to perform login account management or to serve as an email address directory, but once in place, it ends up being a tool that you go back to again and again to solve new problems.
This talk will examine various ways in which LDAP can be applied to solve a wide range of problems on the IT landscape. Topics to be discussed include migrating from NIS/NIS+ to LDAP, integration with email systems at both the server and client, integrating LDAP with Apache to perform user- and group-based authentication to web resources, extending LDAP schemas to contain and authenticate against custom information, LDAP and DNS, accessing LDAP directories from Perl and other languages, monitoring LDAP, and strategies for LDAP and Active Directory cooperation.
Examples will center on OpenLDAP on the linux platform, but the concepts will be applicable to other platforms and engines.
