Sharing the Love
Jason Matusow, Director of Shared Source Initiative, Microsoft Corporation

Date: Wednesday, 19 October 2005
Time: 9:15 - 9:30
Location: Grand Ballroom
Projects on SourceForge.net, millions of developers using freely available source code, more than 600 separate projects available for community participation--sound like Microsoft? For the past five years, Microsoft has been steadily increasing the level of community participation based on many of the precepts of the open source development model. What is the motivation for the world's largest commercial software producer to make so much intellectual property (source code) available for public consumption? If your business model is centered on the production and sale of software, then opening up source code, contributing developer time to community projects, and taking external contributions to projects all carry significant risk. Through Shared Source, Microsoft has been striking the balance between community and commercialization to engage developers, solve customer problems, and create economic opportunities for our partners. Jason Matusow, Microsoft's director of Shared Source, will discuss Microsoft's approach to community and collaborative development.
