Apache: It's not Just for Web Servers Anymore

James Duncan Davidson, Author and software developer, http://x180.net/

Track: Open Source
Date: Thursday, March 29
Time: 1:30pm - 2:15pm
Location: Ballroom H

Apache is known as the most popular webserver on the planet. However, the people behind Apache have created something much more valuable. In the process of working on the Apache Webserver, an Open Development methodology matured. In the past year, the core Apache Group created the Apache Software Foundation which is chartered with development of a variety of projects, including the Apache Webserver, Tomcat, Ant, Xalan, Xerces, and Cocoon. This talk will give an overview of the Apache Software Foundation, the creation of the Jakarta project that contains the Tomcat and Ant codebases, and the structure of the rest of the organization including the XML project with the Xerces, Xalan, and Cocoon codebases.
