Mac OS X Server - Wading Through the GUI
Doug Hanley, MacTEK Consulting

Track: Servers and Networking
Date: Tuesday, October 01
Time: 1:30pm - 3:00pm
Location: Winchester

Doug Hanley covers the main areas of the Server Admin application and Mac OS X Server. So many things can be done from this level that the terminal rarely needs to be cracked open to have a fully functional Web/Mail/File/Windows/Unix/Print server. Mac OS X Server has the all the advantages of Apache, Samba, and more. Hanley describes all the major aspects of the GUI side of Mac OS X Server, and goes into the issues and exceptions that still require some work in the terminal:

Users and Groups
Appleshare IP users will have more difficulty with Mac OS X server than Unix folks. The Users, Groups, and permissions are more like traditional Unix with a few differences.

File Sharing
You can quickly share files to Macs, Windows, and Unix boxes just by pressing a few buttons.

Web Sharing
All the power of Apache and conf files, unless you really want to go there.

Mail Server
This mail server has some real potential and can be set up very quickly.

Print Sharing and Services
Setting up a print server for a Mac or Windows client is almost a snap.

Terminal Necessity
For some things to work right you need to open the Terminal application.
