Although Java has long been a viable option for write-once, run-anywhere development, a new generation of developers has come of age with ASP.NET, Visual Basic, and C# on Windows. All these tools and more are now available on Mac OS X with July's 1.0 release of Mono.

This session serves as an introduction to Mono, the open source implementation of the .NET Framework. Mono provides the compiler, runtime engine, and class libraries that allow you to run .NET assemblies on any platform.

Session outline:

  • Installing Mono and the Mono tools
  • C# language basics
  • Exploring the class libraries
  • Processing XML
  • Networking, remoting, web apps, and web services
  • Database connectivity
  • Creating user interfaces with Gtk#
  • Advanced and experimental topics
