This talk aims to describe the setup procedures, day to day management techniques, tricks and sleight of hand required to integrate, maintain and manage 600+ Macs in a highly challenging and constantly evolving teaching environment.
Based in Perth, Western Australia, Steven Doyle manages the IT for Edith Cowan University's Faculty of Communications and Creative Industries - the School of Contemporary Arts and the world-renowned West Australian Academy of Performing Arts. The Facultys diverse challenges include CAD labs, recording studios, professional quality photographic facilities and balancing the IT requirements of over 4000 students from Australia and overseas! Having spent large amounts of time integrating MIDI labs with multimedia, and exploring RAID storage and sharing for Final Cut editing new technologies such as xSan will be explored from an integration and expansion of facilities and services point of view.
This session will cover techniques such as using asr to deploy multiple images to the desktop, creating and deploying updaters with Package Maker and Apple Remote Desktop. It shows how deployment can be integrated into asset management with real world examples such as bar code scanning based restore scripts. It discusses how day to day help desk tasks can be managed from an integrated help desk system. Session attendees will be able to take away with them a fully open sourced help desk system.
