QuickTime 6's claim to fame was its support for high-quality MPEG-4 video, and AAC to power the iPod and iTunes. Announced support for H.264 (AVC) video makes life even better. But MPEG-4 is more than audio and video -- the complete spec, largely unimplemented by Apple, includes 2D and 3D animation, script and Java-based interactivity, synthetic sound and speech, even facial animation. Fully implemented, there wouldn't be a need for QuickTime features like wired sprites or VR, and perhaps no need for QuickTime itself. Is that a good thing? Does doing right by one mean doing wrong by the other, and with Windows Media 9 as part of the next DVD format, are both already irrelevant? This session will look at where QuickTime stands as it approaches its 15th birthday, and will consider whether MPEG-4 is a potential rival, replacement, or flameout.
