During the 20th century, classes in electronic-music composition required tons of expensive, bulky gear, thousands of dollars worth of cables, a huge lab to set up multiple music stations, storage space for excess gear, and a maintenance staff to keep all of the gear functioning. Within the past five years, music applications have been developed that squeeze state-of-the-art replications of electronic-music gear into a general-purpose computer. With an Apple Macintosh running OS X, the right software, and some relatively inexpensive supplemental hardware, nearly anyone can produce exciting and enjoyable music.

One of the most popular apps is Propellerhead Software’s Reason, which provides the user with a virtual rack of music-making tools, including mixers, synthesizers, samplers, drum machines, sequencers, and effects processors. Reason was designed to allow almost anyone to compose music, but it’s also a superb choice for education because it's far less expensive than the hardware equivalents. Given my experience in teaching Reason to middle-school students, as well as the high quality of music many of them have produced, I feel it’s important to spread the word to educators and the general community so that more people will practice and hopefully teach this rewarding art form.
