Apple's Mail application has long provided a connection between your correspondents' email messages and their online status in iChat through visual indicators and the "Reply with iChat" function. Other applications, such as Konfabulator's iChat Bezel widget, have implemented new user interfaces for notifying you when buddies log into or out of iChat.

This session gives you pointers on how you can implement similar features in your own application by reverse-engineering the private InstantMessage.framework library shipped by Apple on Mac OS X Panther.
