Views have long been considered a basic requirement of an enterprise-ready DBMS. Now, MySQL 5.0 introduces support for views, bringing the popular open source DBMS one step closer to matching all the capabilities of the competition.
Pelzer's presentation describes MySQL's implementation of views, with special emphasis on the extensions to the standard SQL requirements which have been added. Topics include:
- View Concepts:
- Why are views important?
- Where would you use a view in an application?
- View syntax (creating, dropping, using views)
- Privileges: who can create a view, who can use a view?
- The two algorithms used in view processing:
- Temporary table algorithm
- Merge algorithm
- Updatable views:
- Which views can be updated?
- WITH CHECK OPTION, and how it is implemented in MySQL
