Having a single format and protocol for user interface changed computing as we know it. The massive loads that suddenly arrived at a single site required a solution that could both scale linearly across machines and support caching. Without both of these capabilities, the web would grind to a halt. Conversely the power of these capabilities harnessed to a single simple flexible format has turned out to be huge.
This talk is a discussion of how we can leverage the same capabilities in the world of structured and semi structured information rather than user interface. As with the world of user interface, a simpler model will be required that may seem less functional, but is susceptible to linear scaling and intelligent use of caching. The model can ultimately enable the intelligent sharing of structured information across the web. As with the world of user interface, it can mean true federation of information and a world where virtually anyone capable of loading an "information server" and then writing Php can add value and information and intelligence. It will make it possible to intelligently monitor information anywhere at anytime from star observations to weather patterns to news about investments to the temperature of one's home. The talk discusses how we might accomplish this and what are some of the hard issues to be resolved.
