Replication is a very powerful technique that can be used to generate both scalability and redundancy for applications. Maintaining a replica of a MySQL database is a good way to build in a disaster recovery scenario for your application. It is also a way of being able to service a larger number of users, queries and/or connections. While implementing a system to obtain these benefits is feasible, it has some downsides that can be all too common. This talk will discuss some of these common problems and their causes, such as why too high a volume of transactions can overwhelm the replication process. It will discuss some of the current techniques that are being used to solve these problems and review the pros and cons of each approaches. Finally, it will explore alternative approaches that can be implemented to solve common problems without resorting to application changes or other tradeoffs. Specific replication management functions will also be described and user case studies will be highlighted to demonstrate "real-world" implementations.
