Massively scalable web sites ranging from Amazon to Google to Web 2.0 companies such as Friendster and Facebook have hardened the practice of running lightweight open source software stacks like LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP/Python/Perl) on large clusters of commodity machines. Today, traditional enterprises are beginning to shift to lightweight architecture after years of deploying complicated and expensive infrastructure software on proprietary Unix machines. This session discusses the common development and deployment practices for moving to lightweight architecture and its implication for enterprise projects, in particular rich internet applications that integrate multiple services.
