The Munich-based start-up Wundermedia sells web-based event calendars to big web sites as an ASP-solution. To do so, Wundermedia relies on a MySQL database and several PHP, Perl, and Bash scripts. This talk describes how they managed to run the system with high-performance requirements and tons of requests per day on a very restricted budget, disallowing to invest in faster and more hardware. Although most of the techniques used there might not be transferable 1:1 to other environments, some of the solutions are quite creative and might inspire others.
