Tutorial

Vital Rails: An Introduction to the Ruby on Rails Framework

Joe O'Brien, artisan, EdgeCase, LLC

Track: Ruby and MySQL
Date: Monday, April 23
Time: 8:30am - 12:00pm
Location: Ballroom B

Ruby on Rails has proven to be an extremely popular framework for creating dynamic web applications. This tutorial will cover the main components of Ruby on Rails from the database all the way to the front end. Joe O'Brien will walk attendees through creating and deploying an application; demonstrate the latest features such as the new RESTful APIs; take an in-depth look at the unit testing provided by the framework; and view the wrapper around AJAX that Ruby on Rails has created, making it incredibly easy to get the latest effects in a page. Topics covered include:
  • What makes Rails possible: a look at the Ruby language
  • ActiveRecord outside Rails: a introduction to the Ruby on Rails ORM
  • Basic Rails application setup
  • Unit Testing Rails components
  • ActionPack: demonstrating the V and C in MVC architecture and creating the first parts of our web application
  • Deploying with Capistrano, the Ruby on Rails deployment tool
  • AJAX: making your app sing (includes strategies for graceful fall back)

Session wrap up will include where to go for more information and how to keep up with the changes in the community.
