Python for Scientific Programming

Eric Jones, President, Enthought

Track: Python
Date: Tuesday, July 24
Time: 8:45am - 12:15pm
Location: Point Loma A

This tutorial is broken into four sections covering various topics in scientific computing. The first introduces Numeric and its companion modules providing hints that minimize code and maximize speed using these tools. The second describes 2D plotting tools as well as 3D visualization using the Visualization Toolkit (VTK). Section three focuses on legacy Fortran/C code integration using SWIG and f2py. It includes an example demonstrating how to speed-up a pure Python application by profiling and re-implementing "hot-spots" in C. The final section involves parallel programming. It presents a simple, pure Python approach for trivially parallel tasks and pyMPI for jobs needing more sophisticated parallelism.
