Sun has a long history of supporting open standards, but only recently has come around to participating in and creating Free & Open Source projects. Starting in 1998, Sun began to distribute source code under the “Sun Community Source License” to almost universal distain from the Free & Open Source communities. How did Sun progress from there to the decision to make the largest single code donation in history (OpenOffice.org), and what lessons were learned along the way?
- Where is Sun really in the process of “getting” Free & Open Source?
- What are seen as the viable the Open Source business cases at Sun?
- What is the process and what are the common issues when selecting a license?
- What internal tools to facilitate the process of creating a Free & Open Source project have been developed?
- What are the biggest obstacles to making a Free & Open Source project work at Sun?
- How are the projects doing?
- What lessons have been learned?
