DocBook Best Practices

Michael Smith

Track: XTech2001: Open Source and Open Standards
Date: Monday, July 23
Time: 1:45pm - 5:15pm
Location: Bel Aire South

Attendees will learn real-world "best practices" details related to implementation of DocBook for document authoring, with a focus on implementation for collaborative or "large scale" authoring projects.

This tutorial is not an introduction to DocBook. Attendees should be familiar with Walsh and Muellner's "DocBook: The Definitive Guide" and have at least a basic working knowledge of DocBook fundamentals.

This tutorial may be presented in part by a panel of experts, including representatives of open-source documentation projects such as KDE, FreeBSD, GNOME, LDP, and others.

The tutorial is likely to include these DocBook best practices:

  • subsetting the DocBook DTD (i.e. eliminating elements to used in your implementation)
  • extending the DTD (adding elements and attributes relevant to your implementation)
  • creating general entity sets specific to your implementatation
  • building documentation (i.e. automating the process through use of makefiles, etc.)
  • packaging the DocBook DTD, stylesheets and associateed tools as part of an XML/SGML authoring system
  • creating template files, to make document authoring easier and more efficient for new document authors
  • creating style guides for use by document authors and editors
  • streamlining the transformation and publishing (HTML and print) process
