Open Source Tools in Government Intranet Projects: Making Something Out of Nothing
Todd Ogasawara, State of Hawaii
Track: Emerging Topics
Date: Friday, July 26
Time: 11:30am - 12:15pm
Location: Sea Breeze I
Agreements for project resources pre- and post- 9/11 dramatically shifted the way the State of Hawaii Intranet Portal is being built. The original assumption was to use purely commercial platforms and tools: Microsoft 2000 Server, Microsoft IIS, Microsoft SQL Server 2000, Macromedia/Allaire Cold Fusion, etc. The reality shifted this vision. The team is now building the Intranet Portal using Linux, Apache, MySQL, Zope, Python, and PHP. The team is also testing Star Office and Gnome Office on desktops. This session speaks to the challenge of building something (a State-wide Intranet Portal) out of practically nothing using Open Source and other freely available tools and applications.
