OpenNMS has evolved into a robust alternative to OpenView, Tivoli, Unicenter, and the like. However, getting any complicated platform installed and deployed can often be challenging. This session will take the attendee through a high-level architectural overview, basic installation and configuration, customization for their local environment, and extending the platform, via either coding or configuration.
The architectural overview will discuss OpenNMS' approach to automated network discovery and service scanning, service-layer polling, and integration with notification mechanisms. Installation will focus on both package dependencies as well as building from source, while configuration will cover both rudimentary configuration for "out of the box" functionality, as well as a review of configuration and tuning parameters available.
The discussion on OpenNMS will include a review on OpenNMS' integration with RRDTool, as well as an intro to SNMP, so even the newbie can make informed decisions on what data to collect and how to collect it.
Finally, the discussion on extending the platform will get in-depth on the underlying architecture and OpenNMS' "synthtetic transaction" approach to service polling. The developer-attendee will leave with the ability to extend OpenNMS to monitor new or custom applications.
