Last year's lighting talk on an application for a disabled friend, is now expanded into a presentation designed to give a more extended detailed look at the application and the techniques used.
The friend, a mute quadriplegic, uses a special mouse to gain access to
her computer. A Perl/Tk application allows her to quickly choose letters, words, phrases and speak them. She can read books, browse photos and store her chosen words in files for later access, printing or for sending via email.
Using the application she can control the lights, fans and television in her environment with X-10 modules. The unique design challenge gave rise to some interesting techniques and Perl and Tk proved to be very useful tools to solve them.
