One unique aspect of Perl is the fact that it was designed by a
linguist. Every step in the language's development has been guided by a
desire to make it not only efficient for computers, but natural for
humans. Tagmemics is the theory of linguistics that has had the most
influence on Larry Wall, from the earliest stages of the language to the
current development of Perl 6. This talk will explain the basic
principles of tagmemics, with examples from spoken languages and from
Perl.
