To meet the challenges of producing high quality visual effects for "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, it was decided that Linux was going to be the platform of choice to produce the effects. This in itself was a challenge to integrate and make Linux a viable platform for visual effects production, a platform for not only rendering visual effects, but also creating visual effects. From these challenges, we can see opportunities to give something in return to the Open Source community. There are many applications and infrastructure ideas that can be realised and shared in this community that will benefit not only the visual effects industry, but the wider community.
