The College of Computer Science at Northeastern currently uses an NIS authentication system to authenticate users on their supported Solaris systems, and a collection of new Linux lab machines. Falcone's talk covers the efforts to intergrate an LDAP server into a testing environment that supports several varieties of linux, openbsd, OS X, and Solaris 9.
Two of the main reasons this move is being tested are the ease of securing the LDAP authentication channels, and the number of applications which support LDAP authentication but do not use NIS.
Integrating the WinXP lab environment will be discussed briefly, but these machines are not planned for inclusion in the first LDAP rollout.
