More Technical Challenges in Using Perl for Commercial Software
Gurusamy Sarathy, ActiveState Corporation

Track: Perl
Date: Thursday, July 10
Time: 1:45pm - 2:30pm
Location: Salon E

This talk takes off where last year's talk on the same theme left off: Oscon 2002 For continuity, a brief review of the contents of last year's talk will be provided. The emphasis will be on issues that were not explored last year, and have cropped up since, in the speaker's own work. Topics that will be covered include:

  • Regex pitfalls
  • Perl's memory footprint
  • CPAN code quality
  • Portability considerations
  • Exposing Perl as an application extension mechanism

Points of interest will be illustrated using actual problems that were encountered and how they were solved. The concomitant strengths and weaknesses of Perl will be highlighted.
