Matthews' tutorial begins by covering the basics of using MySQL with Java, including installation, configuration, and basic principles of JDBC for the Java developer, as well as developers that are familiar with MySQL, but not Java (PHP/Perl).
He covers the new features in MySQL-4.1, Prepared Statements and Unicode support, and how to use them from Java. Matthews presents examples of how to leverage other Open Source Java projects such as Jakarta Tomcat, Jakarta Object Bridge, Hibernate, Struts, and JBoss.
Also covered are performance topics such as application server tuning, MySQL tuning specific to Java, and developing efficient code that best utilizes MySQL with Java.
