Unsolicited commercial email (UCE), or spam, has become the generic catchphrase to describe the unwanted messages that flood our mailboxes today. While the term UCE may suggest an overall concept, in actuality, filtering spam is much more complex than filtering out UCE. By the UCE definition, there are messages that are clearly defined to be spam yet they are wanted, and reciprocally, messages that are not UCE that are not wanted. This talk will explore the issues of what spam is, how to identify it, and how to defend against it.
