Emerging from the free software movement in the late 1990s, the open source software movement has added structure and direction. Now that society is becoming massively connected, open source software development uses connectivity of the "artisans" to permit a new "mass production," combining the best of the craft guilds of the middle ages and the pragmatic business sense of the industrial revolution. This session will explore the ideas of massively connected society and of open source development and, using demonstrations of current examples from the computer industry, show how a new "means of production" is emerging.
