Adding location information to a database can bring a whole new level of sophistication to data analysis and visualization. Spatial joins can merge data with no common keys, only common spatial locations. Geocoding can turn address information into geographic coordinates. Online mapping can discover data patterns in a cartographic context that are invisible in a tabular context.
PostgreSQL supports spatial data storage and manipulation with the open source PostGIS extension. This session examines basic spatial data concepts, spatial data standards, implementation of the PostGIS spatial extension, and visualization of PostGIS data using open source internet mapping software. Instruction on installation, configuration, and an example web mapping application will be provided.
